Initially named, “fairy floss,” the fluffy treat was ironically invented by dentist William James Morrison of Tennessee, who would later serve as president of the Tennessee Dental Association. Despite its patent registration in 1897, Morrison’s cotton candy machine debuted at the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis.
