Last Saturday on Nov. 8, a cookout was held in South Pittsburg. It was organized for people all around Marion County to enjoy. The food was free and everyone was welcome. It was a joyful and engaging opportunity for people within the community.

The cookout was placed in the empty lot near the Dollar General in town. It started at 2 p.m. and went on for the next few hours, people from all around the county showing up. One guest said “I really appreciate it because this may be the only meal I eat today.” Kindness was extremely evident at the cookout.

Geno Martin, the host of the cookout, said “This is to give back to the community and help those who might need a free meal.” Hamburgers and hot dogs were grilled and served with add-ons and chips. For dessert, cupcakes, cookies, and brownies were also offered. Around 4 p.m., the Christmas classic “Home Alone” was shown on a projector screen provided by Marshell Knapp. While it was being played, hot chocolate and cookies were also served for everyone to enjoy.

The cookout became an all-around engaging and unifying event for those in the community. It brought people together with kindness and generosity, especially during a time of uncertainty as to the government shutdown.
