The town of Jasper held the annual Veterans Day parade this past weekend honoring all veterans in Marion County.
An event that was requested to the city back in 2013 by John Carson and Lewis Fuqua, war veterans from Jasper, as well as funded and ran by the local veterans’ service program VFW & Auxiliary, the 11th annual parade was teeming with visitors and flags alike. All gathered together to support and celebrate those who have risked their lives in service of our nation.
Along with many veterans, many local groups and organizations joined in on the march during the parade such as fire departments from across the county to help raise the flags while also handing out candy to the cheering onlookers. The fire department from Stevenson, Alabama once again joined in for the festivities, this year bringing and raising a massive American flag that required two fire trucks, one from Stevenson and another from South Pittsburg, to help hold and raise for all to see.
“Stevenson has always came. But they really outdone themselves this year when they brought that big flag,” quoted Melinda Carson, coordinator of the parade and daughter of John Carson. Other organizations included SloPokes Speedshop, a local auto shop that specializes in vehicular restoration of vintage cars and trucks, as well as provide aftermarket parts to their customers.
Others included both local scout groups, Interact Club and the Marion County High School band, who marched and performed along the square to help further encompass a day to celebrate those who have served our country.
