Whitwell’s neighboring town of Powells Crossroads held its annual Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, October 26. An event started back in 2021 by the town’s board members as a way to give back to the community, the annual Trunk-or-Treat since its inception has significantly grown in popularity by the locals, with last year’s trunk-or-treat alone having hundreds upon hundreds of families that came in to experience all the fun the event had to offer while dressed as various different characters from a variety of different medias. Missy Layne, the city board’s recorder, added on about how the two priorities of the town’s trunk-or-treat were safety and of giving back to the locals themselves.
“We like to do this just to, number one, safety. But number two just to have fun, to give back to our residents a little bit. And to just see excitement on the kids’ faces.” said Layne. Alderman Larry Higdon and Mayor Dwight Richards also mentioned how safety and giving back to the residents played an integral part of the trunk-or-treat festival, while also mentioning just how much the event itself has grown in visitors and trick or treaters alike since its humble beginnings.
“We had one right at 1,500 last year.” said Mayor Richards. Debbie Payne, member of Grace Baptist Church on Suck Creek Mountain also stated how much visitation has grown, using popcorn balls as an example of the growth of trick or treaters.
“We did 500 last year and ran out. So this year we’ve got 850 popcorn balls.” said Payne.
This was the churches’ second year of attending the town’s trunk-or-treat event. All funding for the event itself was provided through donations and fundraisers, which to Alderman Larry has been a major and helpful asset for the event in order to provide what is needed for it.
“We try to do a fundraiser each year. And kind of make us up a little money, just to do this. But most of it is donated from the businesses and individuals. And it really works out.” said Higdon. And worked out it truly did. For the town of Powells Crossroads has once again had another successful year for its annual trunk-or-treat festival.
