Michelle Story, president and founder of Animal Protective Services of Marion Incorporated, presented a proposal to the Marion County Commission to establish a dedicated, countywide animal shelter.

Story explained that the Marion County Animal Control Committee has held several meetings to explore the development of a proper animal shelter for county use—particularly as a resource for the Sheriff’s Department when handling animal abuse cases. Currently, there is no central facility in the county where abused animals can be housed and treated. This lack of infrastructure has left the Sheriff’s Department with limited options for placing animals in appropriate care, prompting the creation of Animal Protective Services of Marion Inc.

The nonprofit organization is currently accepting donations, with proceeds going toward the purchase of property for the shelter. It also aims to work with both the community and local government to further its mission of caring for animals in need. Story asked commissioners for assistance in securing suitable property for the shelter.

“As a nonprofit organization, we are uniquely positioned to accept financial donations and qualify for grants specifically dedicated to animal welfare,” Story said.

When asked by Commissioner Steven Franklin how much land the organization is seeking, Story said that five to eight acres would be ideal—particularly to accommodate future care for farm animals. She also said the envisioned facility would include space for up to 40 kennels. Some kennels would house puppies, while others would be designated for newly rescued animals in quarantine.

Story estimated that construction costs for the shelter, if built from the ground up, would range from $300 to $600 per square foot. She hopes the facility will be approximately 2,000 square feet—the typical size of shelters she’s worked in previously. The shelter “included one office space, one adoption area in a shared room, two restrooms, a laundry facility, and the remaining space for kennels,” Story explained.

Story will keep the county commission informed on the shelter’s progress. Additionally, a meet-and-greet event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, at Redpoint Inn from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for those interested in learning more about Animal Protective Services of Marion Inc. and how to support the nonprofit.
