The Marion County Lady Warriors and Whitwell Lady Tigers faced off last Wednesday in an unforgettable matchup. The game was nothing short of amazing, as Marion County won 7-6 in extra innings, securing a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

Callie Brock got things started for Whitwell with a single, and Ella Layne reached on an error. The Lady Tigers were unable to capitalize. Marion County’s Albany Harris led off their half of the inning with a single. Lillian Nixon put the Lady Warriors on the board with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

In the third inning, the Lady Tigers responded, scoring four runs. Peyton Goforth grounded out to shortstop, driving in Layne. Lillian Ray singled to left, scoring Lindsay Gonzales. With two outs, Jacie Willis hit a ball through the middle of the infield, bringing in two more runs. In the fifth inning, Ray added another run for Whitwell with an infield single, and Bayli Brown’s double to right-center extended the Lady Tigers’ lead to five runs.

Down five runs in the bottom of the seventh, Marion County’s backs were against the wall. Brynna Thomasson reached on an error, scoring a run. Emma McCallie walked, loading the bases with no outs. Then, in a moment dreams are made of, Nixon stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball over the left-field fence for a grand slam, tying the game.

The game went into extra innings, with Whitwell loading the bases but failing to score. The Lady Warriors got their leadoff batter on, and Harris grounded out on a fielder’s choice. She then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Brylee Thomasson hit a sharp grounder to second base, sending Harris across the plate to win the game.

Both teams battled until the very end. Whitwell showed that they have what it takes to compete with anyone, while Marion County demonstrated resiliency and an unyielding spirit.

Marion County is back in action at home on Friday, April 3, at 3 p.m. Whitwell is set to play multiple games on Friday, April 3; times and locations are still to be determined.
