Whitwell’s Board of Mayor & Commissioners (BoMC) has given the thumbs up for the town’s fire department to utilize $38,150 in fire grant funding to purchase new fire equipment during the town’s March meeting.

According to City Manager Lonnie Cleek, the grant in question is non-matching, all pieces of fire equipment mentioned under state contract. Because of this, only proper permission to utilize the funds was required from the city council, with Matt Davis, Fire Chief for the Whitwell Fire Department, requesting permission from the BoMC to utilize the funds.

“He’s requesting permission to spend that money on the items he receives approval for,” Cleek said.

After the discussion concluded, the BoMC unanimously agreed to grant Chief Davis the ability to use the funds to purchase new equipment for the fire department, further allowing all firemen of the department to be supplied with the latest tools needed when combating against various fires.
