The South Pittsburg Lady Pirates softball team was in action last Friday night against the Ooltewah Owls. South Pittsburg secured a relatively easy 8-3 victory.

Ooltewah got on the board in the first inning off an error by the Lady Pirates. South Pittsburg responded immediately, as Kynleigh Rice and Chelsea Mayfield each hit singles. Macy Mashburn grounded into a fielder’s choice, driving in Rice, and Melanie Robinson followed with a double to tie the game.

In the following inning, Rice drove in a run with a single. Mayfield then reached on an error that allowed two runs to score for South Pittsburg. The game remained quiet until the fourth inning, when Mayfield delivered a two-RBI single. Robinson added her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Layla Brooks earned the win for the Lady Pirates, going the distance. She allowed five hits and three runs while recording two walks and three strikeouts.

Rice and Mayfield led the team with two hits apiece. Robinson and Mayfield each finished with two RBIs for South Pittsburg.

South Pittsburg returns to the diamond Thursday at home, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. against Sale Creek in a district matchup.
