The South Pittsburg softball team is coming off three consecutive Sub-State appearances, bringing excitement into the new season. The Lady Pirates opened the year with a 4-1 win over Huntland in a tightly contested game.
Huntland scored their lone run in the first inning. South Pittsburg got on the board in the third inning when Kynleigh Rice doubled. Macy Mashburn followed by grounding out on a fielder’s choice, giving the Lady Pirates the lead.
In the sixth inning, Chelsea Mayfield led off with a single. Mashburn then hit a triple to left field, allowing Mayfield to score from first. Mashburn later scored on a fielder’s choice from Melanie Robinson.
Madison Sanders earned the win, pitching all seven innings while walking two batters and striking out five.
The South Pittsburg baseball team opened its season with a dominating 17-0 victory over Berean Academy.
The Pirates erupted for 11 runs in the first inning. The first two runs scored on a passed ball. Logan Sisk singled, earning his first RBI of the season, and Gage Mottern walked, scoring another run. Braden Meeks was hit by a pitch, followed by walks from Tristin Nunley, senior Caden Jones, and Tanner Blevins. Kaden Baker was also hit by a pitch, bringing in the ninth run of the frame. Sisk later drove in his second RBI with a fielder’s choice, and Kayden Kilgore singled to drive in the final run of the inning.
In the second inning, Blevins singled, bringing in Neyland Bragg. Baker followed with a single to drive in another run, and Landon White singled, knocking in two more runs for the Pirates.
The Pirates’ pitching trio of Trace Ramsey, Cody Blankenship, and Kilgore combined for 13 strikeouts, and South Pittsburg did not allow Berean Academy a single hit.
